This course is designed to review the new handwashing recommendations in the Centers for Disease Control/Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (CDC/HICPAC) guidelines. As in previous CDC/HICPAC guidelines, each recommendation is categorized on the basis of existing scientific data, theoretical rationale, applicability and economic impact.
Using Disinfectants to Help Reduce the Risk of Infection
This course discusses several studies which demonstrate the survival of bacteria in the environment and the roles that surfaces in the hospital play as reservoirs of infection.
In-service training is considered an important part of any product or system introduced to a healthcare facility.
In-service training is typically customized to the account's specifications and scheduling needs. Both group training and one-on-one presentations may be performed. This training may be documented for personnel files, with dates noted for annual retraining, if necessary. The following are examples of current formal presentations:
Skincare
The Chemistry of Skincare highlights the details of the antimicrobial skincare product formula. The pros and cons of common active ingredients are discussed along with pH, types of surfactants and emollients. Common problems, such as skin irritation, are presented along with solutions and tips for handwashing. The interpretation of research bulletins and the regulations governing over-the-counter antimicrobial skin care products are included in this presentation.
Environmental Disinfection
Reduce the Risk: Precautions to Help Prevent Infection and Principles of Disinfection reviews the infection concerns in the healthcare environment and the critical microorganisms of concern. The levels of disinfection and the relative resistance of classes of microorganisms to chemical disinfection are discussed. The pros and cons of common active ingredients are highlighted.
Foodborne Illness
Food Safety: A Growing Problem discusses outbreak reporting of foodborne illness, reasons why we continue to see outbreaks, and the organisms involved in foodborne illness. Specific examples are given, including routes of transmission and clinical symptoms. The control of foodborne illness is reviewed for meat and vegetable products, as well as a short discussion of bioterrorism and food.
Fungal Control and Removal
Fighting Fungi reviews the typical fungi found in mildew, the damage that can take place in buildings, and what is physically required to control growth. Chemical advantages and disadvantages are discussed and proper safety equipment promoted.
