Washing Your Hands Can Help Keep Everyone Safe
Hand washing is one of the best and simplest ways to prevent infections from spreading. In fact, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that proper hand hygiene is the single most important thing we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illnesses to others.
According to the CDC:
- Annually, over 76 million people are affected by foodborne illnesses, and almost 50 percent are caused by the failure to wash hands, or washing them improperly
- Touching a doorknob, an elevator button or shaking hands can spread germs to others
- Poor personal hygiene by foodhandlers is the second leading cause of foodborne illness
- Some germs can live on dry surfaces for several hours and moist surfaces for up to three days
- Surfaces like kitchen and bathroom counters and toilet seats may be contaminated with bacteria even when they’re not visibly soiled
