Ecolab Issues Food Safety Alert - Emergence of New Strain of Norovirus
Jan 29, 2013
Ecolab recently issued a Food Safety Alert regarding the emergence of a new strain of virulent norovirus following a report from the US Centers for Disease Control. The strain called GII.4 Sydney emerged first in Australia and has spread to multiple countries and is now the primary strain being detected in outbreaks. As has been seen in the past, long term care facilities and restaurants were the most frequently reported settings of outbreaks.
New strains of norovirus typically emerge every 2-4 years, and the basic recommendations including proper hand hygiene and environmental disinfection remain important to limiting the spread of this virus. Ecolab has a suite of tools, including products and procedures available for customers to assist in the event of an outbreak or questions.
