Personal Hygiene

Poor personal hygiene is one of the leading causes of reported foodborne illness and should be one of the foundational pillars of your food safety program.

When to wash your hands?

The importance of handwashing cannot be overstated. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention states “Handwashing is the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection.” With this in mind, you must remember to wash your hands before handling food and after:

  • Using the restroom
  • Touching your hair, face or body
  • Shaking hands
  • Sneezing, coughing or using a handkerchief or tissue
  • Smoking, eating, drinking or chewing gum or tobacco
  • Using any cleaning, polishing or sanitizing chemical
  • Taking out the garbage
  • Clearing off tables
  • Touching clothing, aprons or towels
  • Touching anything else that may contaminate your hands – door knobs, unsanitized equipment, money, etc.
