As AI data centers expand, so are concerns about the enormous amounts of water needed to keep them running. In an interview with Fortune, Ecolab Chairman and CEO Christophe Beck explains how Ecolab is helping address that challenge, and why the company sees an opportunity to help AI infrastructure grow without placing greater strain on communities and natural resources.
Beck points to Ecolab’s acquisition of liquid-cooling company CoolIT as an important step toward that goal. By combining closed-loop liquid cooling with Ecolab’s expertise in water management, power generation and semiconductor manufacturing, the company is working to dramatically reduce the water required by data centers. “We can generate power, we can’t generate water,” Beck says, adding that Ecolab now has a solution “allowing us to make data centers water-neutral.”
