The United States Department of Agriculture considered the costs of various foodborne pathogens on the U.S. economy each year.  Salmonella is the clear leader amongst foodborne pathogens, costing the U.S. economy a whopping $3.7 billion a year. These costs arise from medical expenses, time lost from jobs, and even death.
