Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, announced Ecolab Chairman and CEO Douglas M. Baker, Jr., signed a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve on October 23, 2015, at the Ecolab Corporate Center in Saint Paul, Minn.
By signing the Statement of Support, Ecolab joins other employers in pledging:
“By meeting the Statement of Support criteria, Ecolab pledges to stand proudly with its Guard and Reserve employees, who continue to answer their nation’s call to defend our way of life and whose personal sacrifices are essential to the strength of our nation,” said Nick Ostapenko, ESGR state chair.
The statement of support is in addition to other resources provided by Ecolab to foster a military-friendly sense of community and appreciation, both within the company and externally. In 2013, Ecolab created a Military Employee Resource Group called MERGE. The mission of MERGE is to provide awareness, support and leadership within Ecolab for veterans, those currently serving in the military and those impacted by military service and supporters. Some of the noted benefits of MERGE include: informed recruiting, community outreach, professional development, improved inclusion and retention programs, recognition of veterans and supporters and providing an internal support network for associates.
“This is the right charter to further establish Ecolab as the employer of choice for veterans. This statement of support affirms to our associates that while they are serving their country, they do not need to worry about their civilian jobs,” said Baker. “We’re proud of our long history of hiring service members, who bring exceptional talents to Ecolab, and supporting them while they are helping to protect this great nation.”

When asked about the criteria, Ostapenko added, “Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units and we’re pleased to say that many Minnesota employers go above and beyond what is required by law. To that end, I ask all Minnesota employers to review their human resources policies and incorporate additional policies as needed to ensure they are fully supportive of Guard and Reserve employees.”
ESGR seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD.
