Nalco Water Launches LegionGuard™ LG25 to Help Reduce Legionella Risk

May 30, 2019

NAPERVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nalco Water, an Ecolab company, has introduced LegionGuard™ LG25, a new offering to reduce the waterborne pathogen Legionella pneumophila in drinking water systems.

LegionGuard LG25 is an on-site generated chlorine dioxide product shown to reduce the bacteria in water that causes Legionnaires’ disease1. It provides supplemental treatment for potable (drinking) water and is the first product of its kind to be registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for this use (registration number 1706-244).

“Nalco Water prides itself on delivering solutions that help improve public health,” said Pedro Sancha, senior vice president and general manager, Global Light Industries for Nalco Water. “This new solution is part of a holistic approach to help ensure safe water for our customers and help building owners reduce the risk of Legionella in their water systems.”

Legionella is prevalent in natural bodies of water and can enter a building’s water system from the municipal source, a damaged water main or through construction or renovation projects. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), potable water is the most frequent source of exposure to the bacteria.

Municipalities typically disinfect potable water sources, but in the majority of outbreaks, these measures are often insufficient and supplemental treatment can reduce the risk of Legionella.2 Supplemental treatment with LegionGuard LG25 has been shown to reduce the suspended bacteria in a potable water system, which is an important method to help protect public health.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious and sometimes deadly form of pneumonia that can be spread through contaminated mists and aerosols from water used in showers, cooling towers, hot tubs and spas, decorative fountains, and misters. Studies show that one out of every ten people who contract the disease will die from the infection3. Controlling Legionella can be a major operational challenge, especially for healthcare and hospitality facilities.

LegionGuard LG25 should be used as part of an overall water management program to reduce the risk of Legionella and is one of many innovative technologies offered by Nalco Water.
