Ecolab and CBN News Media Company Launch Third Annual China Seven-Star Award Food Safety Program

June 27, 2013

Ecolab launched the third annual Seven-Star Award food safety program in Guangzhou, China. The award, one of the leading food safety awards in China, was developed by Ecolab and CBN News Media Company, with support from the Chinese Institute of Science and Food Technology, to recognize organizations that have made significant achievements in food safety during the previous year.

Tim Wang, Ecolab vice president and general manager for Greater China, spoke at the grand opening ceremony and joined Qin Suo, general manager of Shanghai CBN News Media Company, and Meng Suhe, director of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology, to announce the 2013 Seven-Star Award program.

“The successful development of China’s food safety industry requires effective collaboration between business, government, industry associations, media and consumers,” said Wang. “As host of the Seven-Star Award and a global leader in food safety, Ecolab is helping companies throughout China improve food safety practices while increasing the overall transparency and reliability of the food chain within China.”

The Seven-Star Award program primarily focuses on the food manufacturing, catering and food retail industries and evaluates organizations based on responsibility, organizational integrity, employee discipline, processes and channel management. As part of the Seven-Star Award final evaluation process, Ecolab and CBN contract with a premier research institute to evaluate nearly 1,000 food manufacturing, catering and retail chain brands in China to identify the “Top Trusted 100,” the 100 most reliable brands in China’s food industry.  The 100 most reliable brands are selected based on consumer feedback and attitudes towards food safety and food safety incidents.

Research to determine the 2012 “Top Trusted 100” found that a food safety incident would impact purchase decisions for almost 99 percent of all survey participants. The research also indicated that consumer food safety concerns were primarily based on the lack of transparency throughout the food chain, including original material purchasing, production processing and product inspection. However, 74 percent of respondents were likely to obtain additional food safety information online. Research also found that 91 percent of participants use the internet to learn about food safety news, more than any other medium.

Following the ceremony to launch this year’s Seven-Star Award food safety program, CBN senior media professionals, experts from Ecolab and researchers from the CBN research institute will conduct four months of survey research and local face-to-face communication with businesses to determine this year’s award finalists.  The list of this year’s finalists and award winners will be revealed in September.
